Sleep inspiration

Aparna Rao‘s My Bedtime project is aimed at underlining that each individual has a unique sleep need that is independent of social time. The clock, which has different versions, can measure and estimate sleep and displays it in real time.

The No 04 has a blank “face” which is connected to a wired pillow. It senses the sleeper’s movements and knows how much s/he has slept and how much more s/he needs to sleep. So the alarm rings only when the body has had enough sleep. A timeless alarm is a strong icon of the fact that a person’s sleep and biorhythms are independent of social time.

No. 17 is an eyeball the size of an alarm clock that has animated behaviours mapped on to specific sleep stages. It displays these in real time, by a moveable eyelid, eyeball and red to white light gradation inside the eyeball.
