The Last Clock

Went to the You are here – the Design of Information exhibit at the Design Museum today. Finally got the huge satisfaction to see Jussi Ängeslevä and Ross Cooper ‘s Last Clock.

“Like a traditional analogue clock, it has a second hand, a minute hand and an hour hand. The hands are arranged in concentric circles, the outermost circle being seconds, the middle circle is minutes, and the innermost circle hours. Each of the hands of Last are made from a slice of live video feed. As the hands rotate around the face of the clock they leave a trace of what has been happening in front of the camera. Once Last has been running for 12 hours, you end up with an easy-to read mandala of archived time. ”

The website has video and pictures less crappy than mine. The one below shows 14:25:18, in the area of South Kensington, London, on 20.06.2002. The clock was pointed at the sky. In the inner ring, one can see that dawn was at 5 a.m. and that the sky was fairly clear till 11,00 when the sky got cloudy. There’s little change at the outer ring as the image of the sky doesn’t move much over one minute.
