Take control of your sleep and dreams

Sleep generates a boom in products in Japan — from special pillows and new-age music to aromatherapy and computerized dream inducers — that promise customers better rest at night.

Japanese company Matsushita Electric Works has developed a sleep-machine system to deliver a full eight hours of Z’s .

The system includes a special bed, wide-screen TV, mechanical massage, soothing music and sound-absorbent walls.

The whole system is expected to cost some $30,000.

But once you got control on your sleep, you might want to manipulate your dreams too…

Japanese toymaker Takara Co (developper of the “bowlingual” and “meowlingual” devices – which purport to translate your pet’s communication) claims to have invented a gadget to help you decide what to dream.

Just before bedtime, the user mounts on the “Dream Workshop” a picture of who should appear in the dream, selects a musical ambience and records key word prompts, such as the name of a romantic crush.

The device then emits a special white light, relaxing music and a fragrance to help the person nod off.

Several hours later, it plays back the recorded word prompts, timed to coincide with the part of the sleep cycle when dreams most often occur. It then helps coax the sleeper gently out of sleep with more light and music so that the dreams are not forgotten.

A study demonstrated a success rate of 22 % in inducing dreams in which one of the prompt words appeared.

The device, which will sell for $136 in Japan starting late August.
