Polar Inertia has a picture gallery documenting the only remaining preserved example of a Titan Missile II silo. This Site (in Green Valley Arizona) was on alert from 1963 to 1982 with a single 110 foot tall 330,000 pound Titan II missile armed with a nuclear warhead.
The control center was a buried three-level, reinforced, concrete structure designed to withstand a nearby nuclear blast.
In the mid-’80s as part of the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty (SALT) with the Soviet Union, the other 53 Titan II sites were destroyed or filled with concrete to make innoperable.
Don’t miss the other photo sets on Polar Inertia: Airplane salvage yards, air raid sirens, intermodal terminals, freeway overpasses, alert hangars, air raid sirens and Cuban TV sets.
