WLAN in the car

Last year, HP provided wireless infrastructure for the BMW WilliamsF1 racing team. Now BMW and HP are joining forces and brains again to equip a car with its own wireless LAN in the back aimed at politicians and top execs who want to use their laptop to browse Internet and send emails when being chauffeured around.

The car is also armed with Bluetooth, can connect via GSM or GPRS and has roaming to boot.

The hope is that the technology should find its place in lower-end models, with salespeople using their PDAs to get connected. But the system might interest the police, enabling them to e-mail fines in seconds to drivers speeding.

More in Silicon.
