TALON military bot gets sensitive

The TALON robots by Foster-Miller are equipped with off-the-shelf chemical, gas, temperature, and radiation sensors that can be read via a handheld device.

The four sensors were integrated into the PDA so that robot operators can send TALON to check an area for the presence of chemicals, radiation, gases or fires before personnel enter.

The robot could assist and protect first responders, bomb squads and military EOD units as they carry out their work.

The company claims that the robots have carried out over 10,000 bomb disposal duties in Afghanistan and Iraq. They can climb stairs and right themselves after a fall. They were the only US-made robots successfully used at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of September 11.
