On the outside

Interaction Design WORK IN PROGRESS Show (8).

Due to concerns over light pollution, the local council has denied Grizedale Arts, Cumbria, permission to install a west facing window in their new buildong, in Lawson Park.

Joe Malia‘s On the Ouside project offers a possible solution to the problem.

A camera mounted on the outside of the building captures the “postcard” views and displays them inside a wall-sized screen. When the weather is miserable, users can record and play on loop, nice days and moments seen from this “window”. Whenever someone stands in front of the window to enjoy the view, a camera captures their movements and projects their body shape into the scene. Inside their shape is broadcast a live feed captured from outside, showing the reality of the environment overrecorded ideal “picturesque” portraits.
