IRS considers taxing VoIP calls

In a public notice, US Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department said they are considering whether a 3 % federal excise tax, instituted in 1898 to pay for the Spanish-American War, applies to VoIP calls. They stated that the tax might be reinterpreted “to reflect changes in technology” used in “communications services.” The notice asks for comments from the public no later than September 30.
