Here comes the Pupil Mouse

After the nose-steered mouse

A team at Shizuoka University has created a prototype that enables users to operate a PC by moving their eyes.

The Pupil Mouse detects the movement of a person’s eyes via infrared beams and a camera. The user can move the cursor on the computer screen according to where he or she looks. To click the cursor, the user winks. Users also can choose characters from a pallet on the screen via this method to write.

The Division of Optoelectronic Systems Engineering developed the system after realizing that people’s pupils are nearly identical in size, regardless of age, sex and physical disabilities.

Existing computer operating systems for the disabled usually are operated through sensors attached to the body. But the Pupil Mouse system does not require such equipment.
