Amphicars as desperate escape option

Following the post on amphicars, Enric Gili sent me the following story:

Cuban mechanic Rafael Diaz Rey converted a 1948 Mercury taxi into a boat to leave the country and sail to the US along with his wife, two children and 10 other migrants. It was Diaz’ third attempt to reach the United States aboard a car converted into a boat. In 2004, he was intercepted on a Buick sedan powering a barge and a decade earlier had to turn back because of electrical problems in a 1947 Buick.

Last week, the blue boat-taxi was intercepted at sea on its way to Florida, but as the family appears to have legitimate documents, they might be allowed to stay in the US. The others will be sent back to Cuba, U.S. officials said Thursday.
