Dotty Tate

Dotty Tate was an array of 40 wands installed at Tate Britain for the “Dotty Tate” children’s day.

Each wand was 2 meters tall, and had a glowing sphere at the top that turned only when the rods were touched and bent. They were fixed via vacuum cups to the floor (to avoid leaving residual markings on the floor), and incorporated battery packs, circuit board, tilt sensors and LED lights. It stood up well to the children’s surprising strengh.

A second part of the installation was the generation of a “live painting” tracking the interaction throughout the day. Using a feed from an aerial video camera, the scene was processed using EyesWeb , isolating the people from the glowing wands. The resulting video piece gave an interesting overview of the different movements occurring within the space.
