Water Gongs is a sound installation made of 7 autonomous gongs partially dipped in water and blown by small robotic arms. They are networked to one another such that a given gong will know the water level of one of its neighbors, and it will fill its own tank by pumping water out of the tank of the neighbor.
The very small waves generated from the vibration are projected on the ceiling through a lighting system located at the bottom of each tank, creating one composition animated conditioned from the issued sounds.
The work, made by David Birchfield, Kelly Phillips and David Lorig, reinforces the concept of network, and the interaction between a programmed atmosphere and its organic components.
