Two weeks after in Madrid…

Two weeks after the launch of UMTS services by Telefónica and Vodafone in Spain, a journalist tried to track down the traces of the arrival of the technology.

So far, the only UMTS mobile phone he could set his eyes on were those displayed during the press presentation, the one offered by a manufacturer and a prototype he spotted through a shop window.

On the coverage front, things do not look exhilarating either: many locations offer flawless connection, but in several places of central Madrid, the presence and quality of the coverage depended on the corner of the plaza he was standing on, on Plaza Colón the connection was intermittent and in la Puerta del Sol it fluctuated according to the weather conditions!

The journalists states that the problems could be due to the fact that some municipalities still refuse to authorize the installation of antennas since their citizens are concerned about the health risks it might imply.
