The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is to try out RFID to keep track of its 44,000 inmates.
Prisoners will wear “wristwatch-sized” transmitters that can track them in real time within the confines of the prison.
Staff will also wear transmitters on their belts.
If the pilot project goes well, the technology could eventually be used in all of the state’s 33 facilities.
Other prisons in California, Illinois and Michigan already employ the technology.
