Most teens and young adults in Japan don’t use computers to surf the Web, they hardly open a newspaper either. Asahi, a Japanese newspaper, has found in mobile phone the perfect ally to appeal to younger generations. While commuting on the train (where lack of space makes it hard to unfold a newspaper), waiting on a platform or queuing, they turn to their mobile phone to kill time.
To keep readers interested, Asahi has also developped the “news plus X” concept: services ranging from searchable archives, current affairs quiz to emergency/disaster alerts.
