Listening soccer balls

Tilman Kuntzel‘s Maintenance Measures for the SoundUnit Fan and Soundwall? is on view at the Sonambiente festival in Berlin until July 16 and refers to the current football World Cup.

He installed on shelves 64 footballs like trophies; they are sculptural metonyms that represent all the World Cup games. Visitors can grab the headphones “worn” by the ball and listen to collaged radio reports from each ball in the languages of the respective opposing teams. When the voices are woven into a sound tapestry at the end of the championship, both the aggressive battles and the peaceful moments of coexistence will be stored within.

A second part of the installation, the Sleep Capsule offers the visitor, psychically stressed from the competitive battles, a temporary avenue of retreat.

The prototype blends the aesthetics of the living modules of designer Joe Colombo with the functionality of Japanese Capsule Hotels.
