North Korea opens web frontiers

North Korea, one of the world’s most militarized state, has opened the web frontier few weeks ago with The Neanra –“My Country”– website. Two information websites already existed, one belongs to the government press office, the Korean Central News Agency or KNCA and is managed from Japan, the other, Uriminzokkiri publishes Pyongyang views from China

Neanra is managed from Germany and offers information about the country politics, tourism or culture, lots of propaganda and online shopping (but many sections are still unaccessible). The homepage opens up with propaganda music and the news are managed, once again, by KNCA, totally controlled by the country’s leader Kim Jong II.

A vast section celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the death of ex-President Kim Il Sung and the 92th Birthday of the current President.

Users have to register and if you forget your password, instead of “What’s your favourite colour?”, you can choose to answer to “How would Korea change after reunification?” or “What will you do when Korea is reunified?”

North Koreans still do not have easy access to news from outside their frontiers although their leader has a well-known passion for the Internet.
