Mobile phone walking tours

Visitors of the Minute Man National Historical Park in Massachusetts can use their mobile phones to get a self-guided audio tour that features music, narration, expert descriptions and re-created eyewitness accounts of the historical events.

The technology, developed by Virginia-based Spatial Adventures, was pioneered in March at Historic St. Mary’s City, a Baltimore museum of history and archaeology and has been used for tours of downtown Denver since April.

In New York, a company called Talking Street offers mobile phone historical tours of Manhattan’s Lower East Side since last September and plans to spread in Lower Manhattan, Boston, and Washington DC this Summer. To get an idea of what it sounds like, listen to their sample.
