The Fiber Tower

I stumbled on a futuristic project proposed by the brilliant Makato Sei Watanabe for Milan. His Fiber Tower structure would allow the scenery in the background to show through, reflect sunlight and show variations in form and transparency due to activities in the interior.

Besides, the structure bends in the wind and moves in case of earthquake. Movements are absorbed by computer-controlled dampers which compensate for movement, so that spaces devoted to human activities do not move. Since it guides external forces away by moving, the Fiber structure can handle stronger forces.

The interior spaces are called bubbles. They are comprised of flexibly elastic materials, and float supported by the active dampers of the Fiber structure. The bubbles change in shape according to the nature and conditions of activities in the interior. The floors form a continuous spiral, allowing them to respond to these changes. The transparency of the bubbles’ surface materials, made of liquid crystals sandwiched in plastic, changes according to the activities in the interior. Alternatively, the skin can become a visual screen, communicating in real time with people on the street.

The roof is a floating garden.
