IDT wants to target those among the 43% US consumers that cannot afford a mobile phone by offering a semi-mobile phone service. The system would mix both Wi-Fi and VoIP.
IDT will start its service in Newmark (New Jersey) covering the area with Wi-FI antennas. There, the handsets (initially given away by the company) can function as home phone and semi-mobile ones. BUT, the devices will also work in any area with an open Wi-Fi network.
The service will cost $2 a month and calls less than 5 cents a minute.
Read on USA Today. The Feature seems rather dubious about the outcome of this initiative.
