Fixing phones “over the air”

Mobile operator China Unicom will deploy “DeltaUpgrade” to upgrade remotely the software on its mobile handsets.

With DeltaUpgrade, the software installed on a device can be partially rewritten by downloading over the air a package that contains the new data.

Although it began as a fixed-line service, DeltaUpgrade is beginning to be used successfully as a wireless service. Recently, NTT DoCoMo used it to remotely fix software bugs found in the “N900i” handsets.
