Exeter-based Last Mile Communications is proposing to use lamp-posts and street signs to offer ultra-fast broadband internet across the UK. Wi-Fi transceivers would be installed in roadside furniture to deliver information (maps, police or tourist information) for free to the smart devices users, as well as promotional content paid for by the supplier.
Besides the system would provide homes and businesses with low-power wireless signals and could also inform local authorities about the speed of passing cars.
First trials in Exeter this year, and deployments are expected in 2005.
