Shintaro Miyake: The Beaver Project

The Massachusetts College of Art is about to host an exhibition of the irresistible Japanese artist Shintaro Miyake.

Phase 1 of the Beaver Project took place in September 2005, when Miyake visited Boston to film his nature documentary, which will premiere at the exhibition. Donning a homemade costume of a “cartoon” beaver, Miyake starred as “Beaver” (see image below, on the left) gathering wood to build his 45-foot multi-colored dam and shopped for chest waders and lumber for his lodge.

The exhibition will include a re-created pond with a beaver village, including the dam and lodge from the film, landscape drawings, “faux” nature documentary film and a performance. Miyake, as Beaver, will draw continuously on the gallery wall for three days to complete a 30-foot narrative. There will also be a Beaver Souvenir Stand and a Natural History Museum of Beavers.
