The robotic rehabilitation treadmill

The Lokomat walking robot, developed by Swiss company Hocoma , wraps around semi-paralysed patients and stroke victims’ legs to exercise each muscle in the atrophied limb and build back muscle memory. Assisted walking sends signals to the central nervous system, teaching unaffected parts of the brain to reinterpret them.

Optic sensors support the therapist in the supervision of training, with increased resistance represented on a computer screen.

Unlike other robots, developped in the USA and Germany, Lokomat can measure the extent to which the patient is participating in the exercise, so that the training strategy can be optimised.
