Achtung Segway

According to report in Spiegel Online, the German ministry of transport is currently looking into giving the Segway Human Transporter an official admission for use on public sidewalks. Until now, you can only use it on private property, but a study in which eleven police officers were given the ever-so-strangely looking vehicle to gracefully patrol the streets of Saarbrücken apparently changed the officials’ opinions. They would require it to be equipped with lights, a horn (!) and a license plate, though. A new vehicle category “electronic mobility aid” might be created as well, the report says.

Segway is hoping for the ministry’s approval since many other important Euro markets like the UK, Switzerland and Belgium are expected to follow the German decision.

Lots of things happening on wheels these days.
