Yesterday, I read that researchers from University of Leeds found out that sunflower oil could prove a handy source for the cleanest fuel of all, pure hydrogen.*
Now it seems that Australian scientists have created an electricity generator fuelled by decomposing bananas, and are currently working on plans for a full-scale, fruit-fired power station.
They let the bananas decompose in sealed vats and uses the methane from the rotting fruit to power an electricity turbine.
Bill Clarke from University of Queensland said he would know by February next year whether bananas were a viable energy source. If they are, the banana industry will consider building a banana-fuelled power plant capable of powering about 500 homes.
However, the technology’s application is limited as it took 60kg of bananas to power a household appliance such as a fan heater for 30 hours.
