In the UK, some 20 % of the households don’t have a fixed line anymore yet, about 30 % of mobile calls are made from the users home.
To encourage mobile users to get back a fixed network, UK telecom company BT has partenered with Alcatel, Ericsson, and Motorola to speed up the development of Project Bluephone, a converged mobile phone that works over the fixed network.
BT plans to launch the converged handset by the end of the year.
Besides, BT also announced its MVNO deal with Vodafone, allowing BT to cement its position as the main fixed carrier of mobile traffic and giving Vodafone an opportunity to become Europe’s leading converged landline/wireless telecom service provider.
