Intel has created a technology that uses low-power Bluetooth to signal when Wi-Fi is needed (see eweek, third “highlight”.)
The device teams Bluetooth characteristics (low power and speed, short distances) with Wi-Fi (high power for longer distances and higher speeds) to hand over data from a device like a watch, smart VOIP phone or PDA.
According to Wifinetnews, it’s clever to use the low-power signaling, but a Wi-Fi transceiver with multiple power levels might act in the same capacity.
