As superstores abandon buildings in order to move into bigger stores, what becomes of the “bix boxes ” they leave behind?
Big Box Reuses is a research by Julia Christensen on how communties are re-using those structures and how other towns are dealing with the situation. She’s making a book of writings and photographs, working with video tapes and interviewing the people involved with these renovations.
Among others, she found that these abandonned supermakets have been turned into an indoor raceway (picture above), a chapel, a library, a county Justice center, even a Spam museum (canned meat.)
On October 12 @ 7pm, she’ll present her ongoing project at the CLUI in New York.
