This is the table of the day:
Froggies, by Josh Nimoy, is a table prototype with a screen embedded into the surface that acts as an arena for virtual life. Children can play with virtual animals by placing symbolic markers on the table and sliding them around. The result is a musical rythm of animal noises.
The table is glowing light blue. The kid picks up a green plastic lilly pad and places it onto the table. A frog appears and makes a “ribbit” noise whose pitch depends on how far the frog is jumping. It jumps in a path determined by the closest lilly pads. The child moves several other pieces onto the table and watches different creatures dancing and making harmonious music.
Placing different pieces on the table will bring different animals: the flower attracts the bird and the piece of cheese is for the mouse.
Inside the table is a CRT screen. A camera detects the positions of each game piece on the table. The software then moves the according animal in a path determined by each of its matching game pieces, resulting in a repeating musical rythm.
