Many Japanese must have seen Ferenc Cako‘s live sand animation on TV as it was featured in NTT West’s TV commercials in 2004. I recently discovered that those commercials are available on the Web.

Even more amazing is his live performance using just sand and a simple projector. So, don’t forget to check this video of his live act at SICAF (Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival) 2003.

He also performed for our favorite TV show Digital Stadium in 2003. He said “I used to make animation movies using sand. It took 3-4 months to make an 8 minute animation because each frame needs to be drawn and captured …” Why does he like this form of drawing? “Paintings, drawings, movies – they only belong to viewers after they are created. However, live sand animation is different. Viewers are present in the process of creating. This is very interesting and fantastic. Other graphic artists would not be applauded by viewers like this. It is the most moving thing than anything else to be applauded by drawing. ”
