More children are killed as passengers in car crashes than from any other type of injury and nearly 12% of children who weigh less than 60 pounds are riding completely unrestrained in their safety seats.
AirGATE Technologies is working on an RFID prototype application for use with automotive child safety seats.
The ‘Smart Buckle’ aims at solving the problems of seat buckles not engaged and of children who are mistakenly left unattended in vehicles.
RFID –definitely becoming kids best friend!– will transmit a radio signal that will trigger an audible warning to the driver when it detects that the safety seat straps are not buckled, or if it is not disengaged after the ignition is turned off.
AirGATE expects to have a working prototype of the system within in 90 days.
