Veiling has been – and still is – the subject of much discussion in Europe.
Taken from a practical point of view, the question of safety has entered the debate on wearing headscarves, in particular during sports activities. It was
suggested that girls simply wear a swim cap with a high turtleneck instead. But no Muslim girl took this alternative seriously and skipped gym class.
Dutch designer Cindy van den Bremen has worked on a solutionwhich combines Islamic precepts with The Netherlands’ regulations and expectations.
She wanted something that did not too literally refer to religion, that would be seen as simply an accessory –wearing it not necessarily meaning one is a Muslim.
Having discussed with Muslim girls and an Imam, she came up with the ‘tennis model’, which recreates the short skirt look but on the headscarf.
The black and white tricot ‘Aerobics model’:
there’s also a dark and light grey lycra ‘Skate model’ with neon accent, and a
dark red fleece ‘Outdoor model’.
