Researchers from HIT Lab, at the University of Washington, are developing a wearable computer that tracks objects as a person with low vision walks, detects when an obstacle is on the way and projects a bright icon directly onto his/her retina to indicate the general location of the obstacle.
The system uses a laptop computer in a backpack and a head-mounted display with an infrared camera. and the display that projects a laser through a vibrating fiber to scan a 100-by-40-pixel image onto the person’s retina. Different icons correspond to different obstacles.
