Who needs popup ads and banner ads all over the place when you can just slap a jacket on a sheep and call it good? These hotel-supporting sheep showed up in the Netherlands. Expect Gizmodo.com cattle coming to a Kansas…

Wow, I find this revolting and rather shocking. One would think that such a sacred thing as an animal (and especially cute sheep!) would not be victim to the violently obsessive and possessive world of advertising. The jackets look uncomfortable with the straps on their legs.
Although it’s not like they’re living in horrible conditions or anything, I would still classify this as animal cruelty – mainly for the advertising mentality feeling the need to strap themselves onto a living thing, and also the possible uncomfort of the jackets. When people drive by / walk by fields with animals, they want to see them roaming free, not with advertisements for hotels on them!

    LOL
Rick, as the weather is currently a lot colder then normal for the season, sheep are wearing protective blankets. This is normal procedure, to ensure the health and comfort of the animals.
The only difference in this case is that the advertises has apparently sponsored these blankets. Nothing sinister going on here :)

Yeah its definitely a bit silly, but then i suppose when humans go around advertising products they imagine, well why not the sheep? Next thing you know, they’ll go one step further and the ads will say something along the lines of “mm..Dutch Lamb is the best” !

    I fully agree!
    This is not cool.

I agree it’s a bit distatseful, but let’s put it in perspective. We wear advetising on us almost everytime we walk out the door.

Relax rick, and think about it. This picture alone..zipping around the interweb is enough advertizing for “Hotels.nl”(which by the way is taking every single fiber of my being not to visit btw;).) And that’s just the picture. I doubt very much that there would be enough traffic in a rural area of the Netherlands to justify fitting sheep with sporty, I’ll be it, aerodynamified jackets.
They also look newly shaven as well. They could be cold.
    Two sides…one story.

I’d accept the advertising money if I was the farmer and needed it.
I’d rather sheep with ads than farms going under, anyway, though it’s not the ideal thing.
It’s nice that you feel sympathetic Rick but the sheep probably don’t care that much. They probably appreciate the jacket if they were recently shorn and it’s cold outside (they have regular non-ad quilted sheep jackets for this purpose anyway, in some places).

Rick on April 12, 2006 at 11:13 pm

Wellllllll…okay. The ‘jacket because they’re shorn and might be cold’ bit makes sense I guess, but I still find it stupid for advertising purposes! And I’m sticking to that!

regine on April 12, 2006 at 11:17 pm

well, i do think it can be effective: so many people who travel by train, yes through rural areas, will probably see the sheep, have a laugh and get the message

eva on April 13, 2006 at 11:18 am

Hey Stefan, Did you know that sheep have a special ability to keep their body temperature in cold areas even they are freshly shorn? The somehow can put body fat to their outer shells so they don’t freeze. Considering this, the jackets are just a joke, they are not even useful for their health.

Many sweetest greetings from the lila cow !!! I just visited these lucky sheeps (during a sudden snow-storm a few days before eastern 2006 !) and they told me that these 4 jackets at the picture are some few and very expensive top-manufactured (handmade !) design-carpets made out of 50% cashmere and 50% australian lambswool by Vivienne Westwood ! The Lady herself tied them accompanied by 5 easter-bunnys ! The carpets will be sold by auction next sunday during the mess in well known cathedral in Cologne/Germany ! A second and probably better date is planned next christmas with Bene XVI in Rome/Italy ! Sheep in foreground did not join the happening because it’s atheist ! Happy easter to all bunnies, sheeps, frogs and monkeys !

    Sheepvertisement

Advertising is about creativity, and it seems that hotels.nl is not in short supply with their new advertising campaign.

Hey everyone- sheep all over this country (USA) get little coats on them to protect the wool from the sun damange/bleaching it out and to keep vegetative matter off it- makes it much easier to process for spinning. Many prize sheep with yummy wool live in the coats year round and are none the worse for it. I keeps burrs off it- not cruel at all.
Best regards-Spinner knitter felter – who loves wool
