Vodafone Malta will start to lay an fibre optic submarine cable between Malta and Catania (Italy) to provide a second international gateway to the island and improve its international telecoms network. The cable will have the potential to increase the capacity to over 1 Tbit/sec, making the system able to cope with future capacity expansion.
After completion of the laying, the cable will be linked to the land transmission system, for linkage to Milan where international carriers will route the traffic to anywhere in the world.
The new international gateway should be a crucial incentive to foreign business who backed away because there was only one cable link with Italy.
