A networked piano and an email clock

Networked Piano by Tom Igoe is a mechanized piano connected to the internet. This work in progress will use a piano to represent network traffic patterns and activities as music.

The artist, who is working mainly on physical interaction design, is mapping tens of computers one-to-one to the keys of a piano. Any network-related activity coming from or going to that computer would play a given key on the piano.
The artist does not expect the modified piano to perform Beethovenesque melodies, though.

In the email clock project, he embodied his compulsive need to check his email in a device that would do it for him, and worry over the amount continually coming in, so he wouldn’t have to.
